Moriage Dragons This type of dragon design is an interpetation of a Nippon design. Dragons of this sort were made on china and various decorative objects in Japan by various factories as early as 1911 or possibly earlier. Called jewel eyed dragons the originals are some of the most popular Japanese ware and are very much in demand by collectors. Many of the antique dragon ware pieces are not marked and may predate 1911. The original designs were made as a result of what is called a slip trailing method, where slip (liquid clay) is applied to the piece from a tube or bag much as we decorate cakes. Some of the designs also had pieces that were hand rolled and applied. These reproductions are all individually made free hand by applying porcelain slip with a brush to the surface of the piece. Each dragon is slightly different and therefore one of a kind. Each piece has been made entirely by Marsha Hedrick.
